SOLVO Holds International Conference for Global UN/EDIFACT Experts

6 October 2017

SOLVO took a big part in organizing the 70th meeting of experts on electronic data interchange (EDI) in logistics -- part of the international SMDG association -- which was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, September 26-28.

SOLVO helped organize the event, welcoming guests from different countries in Saint Petersburg for the first time in the association’s history.

SMDG is a non-profit foundation, run by and on behalf of companies and organizations working in the maritime industry, like container terminals, ocean carriers and related companies and organizations.

Today, SMDG is the only organization of this type where representatives from major ports, shipping lines and IT developers work together to develop and popularize UN/EDIFACT EDI-message standards for the maritime industry.

Since its inception the group has held numerous meetings across the world. The first was held in London in 1987, since then other locations have included Europe, Australia, China, Curacao, Dubai, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, U.S.A. The SMDG meetings occur twice yearly in April and October.

The original objective of the group was to agree a standard format for the exchange of ship stowage planning information. This became known as the BAPLIE message which defines the position of containers in a vessel. The initial development process was slow, reflecting the wide range of interests involved as well as their geographical spread. However, since implementation of the first version of BAPLIE its use has grown rapidly across the world. All carriers and deep-sea container terminals are now dependent on its use for accurate and timely information. Experience has brought refinement and further development with the latest BAPLIE version 3.0 now being introduced.

SOLVO, which has already been a member of SMDG for over 3 years, received a special honor to organize the 70th group meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia.

This time around, the attendees included representatives from such major companies as

APM Terminals, MSC, Hapag Lloyd AG, CMA-CGM, Mersin International Port, and more.

On September 26, the event opened with a keynote speech from SOLVO general director, Elena Grebenschikova, who wished the attendees a fruitful event and to enjoy their time in Russia’s cultural capital.

Among the key issues discusses were:

1)      Development of EDI standard related to the need for checking container gross weight prior to vessel loading or VGM – VERMAS and others;

2) Transition to a new version of BAPLIE message standard v3.1, which sends the unloading list and vessel cargo plan (export and import) with benefit for operators and shipping lines, supporting TOS systems;

3)    Development of Web services and standardization of communications between stakeholders: best practices.

On September 27, head of marketing at SOLVO, Daniel Pershin, gave a presentation, familiarizing new participants with SOLVO, explained how the new Solvo.VGM module solves the problem of verifying the weight of containers, as well as how messages about all containers in the TOS system are exchanged at the port/cargo terminal.

Following the business part of the event, SOLVO invited guests on a boat cruise to get acquainted with the city of Saint Petersburg, familiarizing the visitors with Russian culture and food alongside traditional live Russian music and dancing at the Troika restaurant.

According to guests, it was a very memorable experience in Russia’s cultural capital and many said that they can’t wait to visit again.

SOLVO's was very proud to help host this year's event and is looking forward to continuing this fruitful partnership with everyone who attended in the future.
