The First Container Terminal (FCT) of the Saint Petersburg Port is the largest terminal in Russia and the Baltic Sea region. It is incorporated in the National Container Company (NCC) that is the leading container carrier in Russia and the CIS countries.

FCT is a leader in using new information technologies. In 1999, the terminal undertook its own project to develop a management system to handle container terminal business processes. However, to develop an operation management system for the terminal, a third party software development company was invited. To carry out this project, SOLVO was selected as a leader on the market of real time management systems for warehouse and container terminals.

In 2001, Solvo.CTMS was successfully deployed and put into work at the terminal. The introduction of Solvo.CTMS appeared to be one of the main factors that enabled FCT to considerably increase the volume of processed containers. Solvo.CTMS completely returned its price as soon as in nine months.

Further on, the system underwent a number of enhancements and upgradings. Much of the work was done through a tight collaboration between SOLVO and FCT engineers. As a result, a comprehensive, robust and high-performance management system for container terminals has been built up that does not loose ground by any means before its competitors, and even surpasses them in various aspects. For example, the system is able to handle customs operations that are missing in similar Western products. Moreover, Solvo.CTMS complies with international standards and is recognized by all line operators working at the Saint Petersburg Sea Port.

The system automates all technology processes to handle containers at the terminal. An additional system module is designed to apply strategies managing container placement operations and to register container moves in real time. This helps reduce the number of container moves through a more optimized container placing approach.

A GPS-based positioning system is used to pinpoint RTGs and containers within the terminal and to exclude any possibility of a loss of containers.

In addition, data exchange mechanisms based on the EDIFACT protocol is used.

Another important factor of the successful completion of the project was the seamless integration of Solvo.CTMS with the terminal's proprietary technological and financial documentation management system.
